Introduction
to Centering Prayer
Saturday,
January 16, 2010
1-5pm
$25 includes meditation cd
at Grace
UMC Life Center
Resting in God is a phrase
used to describe Centering Prayer which is an ancient Christian
meditation method.
This simple prayer method invites us to let go of the busyness
of our lives and to quiet our minds in order to rest a few
minutes in silent communion with God. Centering Prayer facilitates
the movement from more active modes of prayer - verbal,
mental or affective prayer - into a receptive prayer of
resting in God. It emphasizes prayer as a personal relationship
with God. At the same time, it is a discipline to foster
and serve this relationship by a regular, daily practice
of prayer.
Christian Contemplative Prayer is the opening of mind and
heart - our whole being - to God, the Ultimate Mystery,
beyond thoughts, words and emotions, whom we know by faith
is within us, closer than breathing, thinking, feeling and
choosing; even closer than consciousness itself. The root
of all prayer is interior silence. Though we think of prayer
as thoughts or feelings expressed in words, this is only
one expression. Contemplative Prayer is a prayer of silence,
an experience of God's presence as the ground in which our
being is rooted, the Source from whom our life emerges at
every moment.
This workshop will include some restorative yoga poses,
so dress warmly in layers and bring your mat, blankets,
strap, eye pillow, and bolster if you have one! Some props
are available at the studio, too.
Goals of This Introduction:
1. Learn method and principle of the meditation prayer as
a way to deepen your relationship with God.
2. Experience 2 prayer sessions to practice the method.
3. Have the opportunity to ask questions about the method.
